As the southern most beachfront community on the West Coast of Florida, we are blessed with year-round beautiful warm weather, enjoying warming Gulf breezes in the winter and cooling Gulf breezes in the summer. Our magical Island is truly a haven in the tropics, and we are blessed to be spared from the brunt of the hurricanes. Bruce Albrecht, Professor of Meteorology at the University of Miami, explains scientifically why Marco is so safe from hurricanes, "A rare combination of factors have to be present for Marco to take a direct hit from a hurricane. First, a storm would have to either originate or move into the Gulf of Mexico. When that happens, a storm will most often hit Florida's Panhandle. Second, a storm would need to be traveling west to east and winds from the west would have to push it. Westerlies usually happen above 30 degrees north latitude and Marco lies just south of 26 degrees north. In addition, westerlies tend to shear a storm apart." That is why statistically it is so rare for Marco/Naples to get hit with a hurricane. Donna hit the area in 1960 and then we were not hit again for 45 years until all those unusual factors came together in 2005 and we were hit by Wilma. GOOD NEWS- 1) thanks to our stringent building standards we had very minimal damage, mostly screens & tree branches, and 2) thanks to our small community and outstanding city services our streets were clear within hours and our power was back on within 24 hours and we could resume normal life. We are truly a lucky haven in the tropics. Even our early ancestors, the Calusa Indians, knew about magical Marco Island. They believed the Island was sacred and chose to settle here because of its abundance and safe weather. In conclusion, without scientific jargon, Marco Islanders remain the luckiest residents in Florida!
