The new Jolley Bridge design will represent a first in Florida. The guardrail redesign will enhance the aesthetic entrance to Marco Island and will include:

  • More expansive views
  • More of an island-type character with a grassy slope,

similar to the current style of the bridge

  • Safer access to recreational areas with changes to the median
  • Modified access on the marina side of the bridge for a future linear park
  • Access for pedestrians will be enhanced under the bridge and provide connections between future parking and the proposed linear park

The new redesign is also under budget, coming in at approximately $120,000 less than the original design while meeting the same safety standards. The project is on time with the second span having begun in January 2010; the new bridge will carry southbound traffic to the Island while the existing bridge will carry northbound traffic off the island. The new span will include 12-foot lanes, and an 8-foot sidewalk with lighting on the west side.

In addition, a new roadway will be built to connect to the new bridge and the existing roadway will be resurfaced on each side of the bridge. Both the City of Marco Island and Collier County will plant and maintain landscaping on each respective side of the bridge.

On Saturday morning over 40 children made a visit to Santa’s workshop at Mackle Park. The Christmas spirit abounded as the park’s staff, deputized as Santa’s elves for the day lead an very energized group of children who worked hard on a variety of crafts activities including reindeer headbands, Christmas necklaces, ornaments, decorating paper Christmas trees and making gingerbread houses.

Even from a distance one can see the tall and majestic Christmas Tree that twinkled beautifully on Saturday night at the annual Christmas Island Style Christmas Tree Lighting and Community Celebration. Local talent and tailgaters gathered at Veterans’ Community Park to watch the Christmas Tree being lit. Hearty Marco Islanders who braved the cool windy weather were treated to a fun-filled evening as a variety of local talent entertained the holiday crowd. In what has become a holiday tradition, attendees used the tailgating area to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Mindy Matusiak, Mackle Park recreation program supervisor wants to also remind everyone to attend the Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department’s Cookies and Milk with Santa on Saturday December 12th from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Mackle Park. Kids, make sure that you get your list together for the big day and don’t forget to tell your parents to bring their cameras. Cookies and milk will be served for Santa’s visit. Call 642-0575 for more details. Walk-ins welcome. There is no charge for this event.

Join us for the very fun community Christmas Island Style Annual Street Parade  this Saturday night December 12th at 6:30 p.m. held on San Marco Road which will begin at the corner of Balfour and San Marco Road then turns south on Barfield Drive. Floats and bands entertain at the night-time parade. For more info call 394-7549.

It’s here again! The Marco Island 22nd Christmas Island Style Boat Parade, this year held on Saturday night December 19th starting at 6:00p.m. The boat parade starts at the Marco Island Yacht Club through Smokehouse Bay and back to the Snook Inn. Enjoy boats all lit up decorated in holiday style.

Come join the fun at the Marco Island Civic Association’s Holiday Celebration on December 20th at 3:00 p.m.; featuring the Shindigs and Santa at Resident’s Beach, Resident’s Beach membership required. For more information call 642-7778.

NAPLES — Now entering its eighth consecutive season, The Naples Players’ ETC… Readers Theatre presents a wide variety of plays in the intimate Tobye Studio at Sugden Community Theatre.

The mission of ETC Readers Theatre is to present Southwest Florida audiences and actors with opportunities in theatre other than fully-staged productions. Tickets to ETC shows are priced at an affordable and popular $10 each. The mode is black-box, script in hand, with limited rehearsals, minimal blocking, no props, black costumes and no line memorization.

The theme of the season opener on Sunday and Monday Nov. 8-9 is “Making It.” The four plays will include: “Shock of Recognition” by Robert Anderson; and “Give the Bishop My Faint Regards,” “Dreams of Glory” and “Getting In” by Frank J. Gilroy.

Friday and Saturday Dec. 4 and 5 will mark the sixth annual “An Evening of New Plays,” with a holiday reception following the plays and awards.

Consecutive Sundays Feb. 14 and 21, themed “Foote Steps,” will be a tribute to the Pulitzer playwright Horton Foote and will mark the one-year anniversary of his passing. The plays: “Oil Well” and “The Dancers” will be performed.

Sunday and Monday April 11 and 12, themed “An Affair to Forget,” will present four plays: “So Please Be Kind” by Frank J. Gilroy, “A Sunny Morning” by Joaquin Quintero, “Barry, Betty and Bill” by Renée Taylor & Joseph Bologna, and “Footsteps of Doves” by Robert Anderson.

And Sunday-Monday, May 23-24, the 2010 “Classic!” will present a comedy in the spirit of Sheridan, Shaw, Wilde, Aristophanes, Moliére and Shakespeare. This year’s “Classic!’’ is a contemporary take on historic French satire, “Cecile, or, The School for Fathers,” by Jean Anouilh.

Curtains are at 7:30 p.m. and tickets go on sale at the Box Office one month in advance.
