5 Steps To Organize Your Home

As Florida homeowners, we must be creative when it comes to storage. Maximizing every square inch of space is vital to decluttering our daily lives and ensuring peace, tranquility, and most important – organization! With attics often too hot to store things in and without basements to turn to, Floridians have to “create space” where they can. Thank goodness, plentiful storage is always in style!

#1 If It Doesn’t Bring You Joy – Throw it Away!

Following the wisdom of Marie Kondo, ask yourself “Does this item bring me joy?” If the answer is yes, then keep it. If you hesitate, either throw it out or donate it. A sometimes difficult, painful, and yet brilliant freeing exercise in de-cluttering your home. We highly recommend you give it a try!

Once your space is de-cluttered, it is easier to tackle the daunting task of visually organizing your space.

Think vertically….Using the space above your head and at your feet is a great way to maximize space in a small room. Adding DIY storage above the clothing rack in your closet or placing a shoe rack at the bottom of the closet are easy fixes for ways in which to stay organized. Don’t forget to use wall space. Wall hangings, hooks, and envelope organizers are great ideas as well!

#3 The Right Containers

The right storage containers, baskets, and bins make all the difference in how you store your items and how you keep items hidden from guests. Be sure to measure your containers and ensure that they are the proper size and fit for the items and location. As a tip, storage items should fit the location snugly and should be easily accessible. Be mindful of how items will stack together and on top of one another, as this will ensure that you maximize space.

#4 The Label Maker is Your Friend

Go ahead – put a label on it! Labeling your storage bins is helpful to everyone who needs to access its’ contents and it looks pretty! Keep your labels simple. Fall, Spring, Christmas, etc.

If you don’t own a label maker, some masking tape and a sharpie work just as well!

#5 Invest in off-site storage

Sometimes you just need a little bit more room! When dealing with smaller spaces, moving or selling – sometimes you just need a little extra space. Off-site storage can be a great solution to helping you tackle your storage woes. You can rent short-term (month to month) or long-term. Just be sure to check the prices and location as you want a place that is located not far from where you will need access. Also, be sure to consider whether you will want a unit with air conditioning, or on the first floor, etc.
